The soundstrack for True Random will be released Spring 2026
Time is out of joint. It resides in the body. True Random attempts to grasp the feeling of balancing on the edge of the abyss. Losing orientation. Losing the organization of the world.

There is so much that matters in a life that is ruled by chance. It can be felt when the world is undergoing rapid transformation, and it serves as a reminder of how vulnerable we are, and how quickly everything can change. True Random is a performance where community and the poetic force of moving together are central, and where the meaningfulness of the randomness is explored.

True Random is the third piece in a series of performances exploring our personal, inner time in different phases of life. The experience of the passage of time is embodied through different formats, spaces, and temporalities. The previous works in the series are The Labyrinth (2022) and Maze (2023). By following the architecture of the labyrinth, the logic of the maze, moving towards the concept of “True Random”, these choreographies invite the audience to reflect on life and existence in relation to the most fundamental movement: the passing of time.
About the artistsMarie Topp and Julia Giertz have been collaborating for ten years and have created a number of works. Their artistic practices meet at the intersection between choreography and sound art. Together with lighting designer Mårten K Axelsson and dramaturgist Igor Dobričić, they have formed a distinctive expression through intentionally crafted minimalism that holds space for the movement of time.About the Artistic Collaboration“The music by Julia Giertz and the lighting design by Mårten K Axelsson. Music, light, and choreography are not merely woven together, but play together like a jazz band, giving space to each other as equal partners. There are layers of narrative that we cannot see, but sense as inner images and dream visions in a blend of movement and light.” – Iscene.dk on The Labyrinth

Their works have been shown at MDT (Stockholm), Dansehallerne, Inkonst Malmö Takkelloftet/Operaen (KBH), and Kampnagel (Hamburg) amongst others.

Premiered at Dansehallerne (Copenhagen) May 25 2025

Co-Production: Dansehallerne
Supported by: Statens Kunstfond, William Demant Fonden, Wilhelm Hansen Fonden, Knud Højgaards Fond, Beckett Fonden, Augustinus Fonden, Københavns Kommune Scenekunstudvalg

We have chosen to forget what we think we know about the theatre, dance, collaboration, music, technology, community, storytelling, publicness, situation, event, intimacy, body, presence.

We left those preconceived notions behind in order to search for their renewal.

So, as it is often the case inside the maze, we keep moving backward in order to move forward in more than one sense:

We are retreating toward death so that we candiscover how to live.

We are joining together so that we can againunderstand theatre.

We are engaging a resting subject so that we can recover a resonating object.

We are reclaiming the sculptural volume of the body in order to make it dance.

We are discovering the origin of music in sound in order to listen deeply.

We are inviting you to be invited by you.

We are seeing you in order to be seen.

Because what was before will come back again,as new.

Or at least - that is our hope.

Maze is the second work in a series consisting of three reflections on time and existence. Staged in different formats, spaces, and temporalities, theseries will process the relationship between the inner and outer worlds and reflect on what existence is in a world of decay.
About the artistsMarie Topp and Julia Giertz have been collaborating for ten years and have created a number of works. Their artistic practices meet at the intersection between choreography and sound art. Open research space:16 - 17 of March Hägerstens Medborgarhus (Stockholm)

About the method development:
In this research the main focus has been on deepening the relationship between listening and memory, movement and electronics. We have been working closely with IR-sensors, Bela microcontrollers and transducers in the choreographic space. The sounds produced have been recorded memories and syntetic percussion filtered through various objects, where the filter responce and resonance of each object has been enhanced by a syntezised resonances and modulation.
About the collaboration between Marie Topp and Julia GiertzMarie Topp (DK) and Julia Giertz (SE) met at The National School of Performing Arts in Denmark (2005) – since then they have maintained a close artistic dialogue. During the last ten years they have been continuously involved in each other’s artistic projects as colleagues and collaborators. Often in collaboration with lighting designer Mårten K Axelsson and dramaturge Igor Dobričić.

Drawing on their shared interest in sound and its relationship to the body, artists Cara Tolmie and Julia Giertz collaborated to make a suspended, sonic sculpture entitled Llac. The curved metal sculpture hangs within the pond, emitting irregular calls, tones and taps towards the multi-layered vocals playing through the speakers overhead. All of the sounds used in this piece are vocal recordings made onsite at Art Lab Gnesta by Cara during a residency in March 2022. These include her mirroring the uncanny sounds of the melting lake with her voice, exploring haunting reverberations in the brewery hall and conducting a cyclical vocal practice she calls Internal Singing.Llac is a permanent sonic sculpture that reverberates, sings and contracts, using the sonic as a way to reverberate and call between multiple watery beings.

Commissioned by Bronwyn Bailey-Charteris and Artlab Gnesta as part of 'High Tide, Fine Line'
